Highlights of the Sixth Health Foundation Nepal (HFN) Annual Conference
HFN 6th Annual Conference was held in Staten Island University Hospital, New York from 26-27 May, 2018.
TRANSLATING IDEAS INTO ACTION: THE EXPERIENCE FROM COMMUNITY BASED HEALTH INITIATIVES IN NEPAL
Health Foundation Nepal's sixth annual conference held in Staten Island, New York concluded on 27th, May 2018 with great enthusiasm and excitement. More than 70 health professionals who traveled from different parts of the United States and Nepal participated in the program. This two-day event showcased HFN’s past and current activities and featured other like-minded organizations such as Possible Health, Karma Health and America Nepal Medical Foundation that have positively impacted rural health in Nepalese communities. The Consul General of Nepal in New York, Mr. Madhu Marasini, the guest speaker, lauded HFN and promised full governmental backing towards the HFN's endeavors. HFN president Dr. Kamal Wagle inaugurated the meeting by walking the audience through HFN’s mission, key strategies, organizational structure, and the foundation's inspiring five-year journey. Executive director, Dr. Shreedhar Paudel, highlighted the foundation's past and present community-centered activities and projects. Among the major initiatives implemented in 2017 were the mental health project and screening of preventable chronic diseases. America Nepal Medical Foundation (ANMF) has already decided to provide monetary support of $60,000 for mental health project. HFN Childhood Malnutrition Project has enrolled 201 malnourished children in the home-based nutritional rehabilitation program in Saudiyar, Laxmipur and Kavre communities in Dang, Nepal. The program provides treatment and monitoring of the children with severe malnutrition at their own house, besides promoting intervention to prevent malnutrition in the community. Additionally, HFN's Health and Computer Literacy Project was expanded to 7 schools in rural Chitwan, Nepal.
Dr. Mary O’Malley’s hands-on session on resilience and sound meditation (on healing sounds) urged the participants to nurture the spirit of gratitude and thankfulness.
